Sebastian Vallejo
Sebastian Vallejo was born in Puerto Rico in 1982. His artistic journey began in his homeland, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for his cultural heritage. Vallejo later pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, graduating in 2004. This foundational education set the stage for his unique approach to painting and his profound connection to his roots.
Eager to expand his horizons, Vallejo moved to the United States to further his studies. He attended The Art Institute of Chicago, where he completed his Master’s degree in painting and drawing in 2009. This period of intense study and immersion in a vibrant artistic community significantly influenced his evolving style and technique.
Vallejo’s work is deeply rooted in a tradition of artists utilizing found fabrics as their canvas support. He incorporates fabrics that reflect his Puerto Rican heritage—often brightly colored with almost garish or kitsch floral patterns. Using his hands to apply paint, Vallejo channels the spirit of the Abstract Expressionist painters of the 1950s, creating works that are both spontaneous and deeply personal.
His paintings are inspired by the expansive quality and spontaneous character of nature, particularly the light and color of the Caribbean. Organic and inorganic forms collide and transform in his work, resulting in pieces that are vibrant, dynamic, and reflective of his cultural background.
Vallejo’s work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across different American cities. His notable solo exhibitions include:
