Provisor Janis

Janis Provisor is an accomplished artist whose work spans multiple disciplines, from painting and printmaking to design and jewelry. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Provisor’s artistic journey began with a Master’s Degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in California, laying the foundation for a diverse and influential career in the arts.

Provisor’s art is characterized by a unique blend of abstraction and recognizable forms, driven by her deep engagement with both external realities and her internal experiences. She describes her creative process as a “pas de deux” between herself and the canvas, where spontaneity meets premeditation. Her work is not intended to deliver messages but to convey emotions through bold expressions of form and color.

In 1989, Provisor was invited by Kathan Brown of Crown Point Press to venture to China and explore the traditional Chinese woodblock printing technique. This pivotal experience not only enriched her artistic vision but also laid the groundwork for future endeavors in Asia. In 1993, she, her husband Brad Davis, and their young son relocated to China and Hong Kong, immersing themselves in the region’s vibrant culture and art scene.

During their nine-year stay in Asia, Provisor and Davis co-founded Fort Street Studio, a company renowned for its exquisite hand-knotted silk carpets. This venture marked a significant shift in Provisor’s career, merging art with design. Concurrently, she pursued jewelry design, leveraging the abundant resources and inspiration she found in Asia.

After taking a hiatus from painting in the early 2000s, Provisor reignited her passion for the medium during a summer in Normandy in 2013. Since then, she has dedicated herself to painting full-time, working from studios in Hong Kong, Italy, Brooklyn, and now Connecticut. Her work continues to evolve, reflecting both her personal growth and her unwavering commitment to her craft.

Provisor’s art has been showcased in galleries worldwide and is included in numerous museum collections. Her extensive career in the arts is a testament to her versatility and enduring influence in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Today, painting remains at the heart of Provisor’s creative endeavors, as she continues to explore new dimensions of artistic expression and looks to the future with enthusiasm and purpose.
